Many Counselors Are Wise
Many Counselors Are Wise
Wisdom to remember
Vicki, a mentor and my pastor’s wife at Maranatha Chapel passed on some wisdom I believe is worth sharing. She had a wonderful gift of placing me “in the moment” of special stories in God’s word. It was magical and enchanting to hear her beautiful voice as she spoke the Word, as if we were present and seeing it all first hand. She said many wonderful wise things; one in particular I will never forget.
One evening in Africa, after a women’s conference, we took a stroll down a red dirt road leading to our little boarding house. This road was more like a bike path in the country. It had fields on both sides;
and as you glanced past the field on one side, the water of Lake Victoria shone in the distance. But not this evening, all the eye could see was the darkness of the night and the brightness of the stars. Vicki stopped and looked up, which caused me to do the same. As we stood there on the dirt path in the middle of fields deep in Africa, she said, “This is what David saw when he wrote the Psalms.” She was in the wonder of that. As she spoke the Psalm, I felt I was right there with David as he sat with his flock, and poured out his heart to his living God.
The phrase Vicki shared with me which truly stuck and really helped me with other people is rather a simple one, but very overlooked by many. She shared, “Just let people be who they are.” Simple, right? But when we stop to think about this statement, we at times don’t allow people to be who they are, or we ourselves experience someone trying to change us. I have been on both sides of this. I also know the pain that comes from someone trying to change me into meeting his or her standards, comfort zone, etc. It’s amazing how a wise statement can affect your life and how you treat others. This is why it will enrich your life to have Godly women walking alongside you. The effect they have on you will flow from you to others who cross your path as well.
